FREE At Word Family Book for Short Vowels
Learn to Read is designed to help kids take off with the reading by focusing on common short vowel word families and beginning sight words from Dolch and Fry's list.
With 6 sight words under her belt, her letters and sounds solid, a good grasp on phonological awareness, and a knowledge of a few word families, I knew she was ready for a next step.

Well remember that children can only accomplish so many tasks at a time and giving a child a word family versus a bunch of words to decode cuts down significantly on the number of tasks to complete, thus making the child more successful and building confidence in spelling and reading.
You can also use alphabet magnet letters to put in the Square. The alphabet letters are fun. They had so much fun finding out the words that belong to the different families that it became more of a confidence builder than a worry about memorizing.
